Diane Parker - Rider & Director.
6 years HER2+ survivor.
Diagnosed: 2004.
As the founder I am very proud of all the survivors, supporters and sponsors of this wonderful event.
I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in November of 2004. The illness and uncertainly in my life certainly took its toll on all around me, but somehow I found the strength to be positive and get through it all. After going for regular mammograms it had somehow gone undetected and I went for a second opinion which confirmed my worst fears after a biopsy was done. I had the bilateral mastectomy, chemo and as I found out I had the HER2+ Breast Cancer, I also had to go onto an IV drug called Herceptin. During this year’s ride, I will celebrate my fifth year of surviving breast cancer.
In 1996 my cousin had died of breast cancer as she was diagnosed in a very advanced stage. I was involved with the Ladies of Harley in the USA at the time, and we decided to spread the word for women to be aware of this dreaded disease. I couldn’t believe it when I, too was faced with this diagnosis later. I know because of my awareness I was able to pick up my breast cancer at an early stage.
I work in the Hospitality/Tourism industry and sell South Africa to the International markets. After my diagnosis I was invited to ride in the USA with a group of women that were all breast cancer survivors. I wanted to bring something similar to South Africa but also bring awareness, education and support and in October 2006 “Biking for Breast Health – A Journey of Hope” was born. In 2008 the “Temptations Journey of Hope” covered even more communities and for 2009 the “ Journey of Hope” we will continue and spread our message and bring hope to many communities throughout South Africa and Beyond.
Knowing that there are now many different treatments available, also gives one confidence and HOPE that you can overcome this dreaded disease and become more enriched because of it.
