Claire draws her inspiration from Romans 8:28, "All things work together for good for those who love the Lord." "From this we can be encouraged to keep up the hope because He is our hope," says the 57 year old pre-school teacher, wife and mother of four.
Claire was born and raised in Gauteng and has always maintained a fairly healthy lifestyle. She discovered a lump in her breast early in June 2011 but was not particularly bothered by it initially as she had an existing lump on her arm and on her neck. She attributed the tightness of her bra to having gained some extra weight. However an odorous discharge from her breast raised some concerns.
When asking for advice Claire was encouraged to go for a check-up. She visited her local clinic and was referred to hospital where a series of FNA tests were conducted and malignant cells were discovered. Claire was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma Cancer.
"Because we had been praying about it before, I could receive the news calmly," says Claire. "I believe that God is in control. My encouragement to others is to know your body; go for your check-ups and do your monthly self-examinations. I did not and now I'm facing the consequences."
Claire is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
