5 Years Survivor, Diagnosed : 2004
Age: 57 years

Life brings many challenges, but with faith and hope we can face them...

Life can be strange sometimes...just when you think everything is ‘cool’ you could get slowed down.  I have always enjoyed excellent health, but in July 2004 was diagnosed with breast cancer.  This happened just before my 52nd birthday and came as a major shock as there was no history of cancer in my family.  At that time I wondered whether a mistake had been made with the diagnosis and this prompted me to get a second opinion, only to have that dreaded word ‘cancer’ confirmed.

Within a week of diagnosis I went into hospital for a mastectomy.  After that my world  just seemed to stop....so many thoughts ran through my head.... I tried to remain in a positive frame of mind,  and just when I convinced myself that I could get through it all, I would look in the mirror and wonder “How...?”    I tried to put on a brave face but when I was alone I cried, I had many doubts, many fears, but here’s the good news - I GOT THROUGH IT - and now 5 years down the line am still clear of breast cancer and am able to enjoy each new day...a real privilege indeed.

Things could have been very different had my cancer not been caught at such an early stage and I can vouch for the importance of regular check-ups and survival through early detection.  I continue to have regular check-ups and in July this year when I celebrate my 57th birthday, will also celebrate my 5th year of survival.

Being in a positive frame of mind goes a long way, and I am grateful for the support of a wonderful family and a great group of friends.

I was fortunate to be selected for the first Breast Health motorcycle ride in South Africa which took place in October 2006, and as co-founder of the Journey of Hope was honoured to take part the 2008 ride from Johannesburg to Cape Town.  I have been selected to take part in the 2009 Journey of Hope motorcycle ride from Cape Town to Johannesburg, and as a Harley riding, breast cancer surviving ‘messenger of hope’ am grateful for the opportunity to once again ride my Harley across our Country to give others hope, and to spread the good news that this dreaded disease can be beaten.
