Rider, 39. Pretoria
Adrie Smit is a wife, mother, grandmother and thanks to early detection, she is a breast cancer survivor. One morning in 2008 Adrie was horrified when she felt a lump in her breast. Her first reaction was that it is not serious, but none the less made an appointment with her gynaecologist who referred her to a surgeon. The news came back that the cancerous cells had to be removed and Adrie had to have a mastectomy.
Adrie's message is clear, know your body and religiously do your breast self-examinations trust your gut, when you feel something is not right and your Dr. says that there's nothing wrong…get a second opinion. If Adrie had not been vigilant about self-examination, she would not have been alive today.
